On March 7, Palo staff and students wore bow ties to school to honor Mr. Hechter’s passing after a long battle with cancer. Students and teachers who knew him had grown to admire and love his habit of wearing bow ties each Wednesday. In remembrance, staff and students sported bow ties to pay respects to him and his legacy.

Mr.Hechter was loved by his AP and IB students and all those lucky enough to get to know him. Mr. Hechter’s passing hit the school hard, so staff and students organized bow tie day and organized both a cancer walk on March 10 and a candlelight vigil that was held on Feb.12, all to remember the character that was Marc Hechter.

It was well known that Mr. Hechter had a true passion for teaching and cared deeply for his students, being some of the many admirable traits our school knew him for. Students and teachers alike find it important that his character is not forgotten.

“Mr. Hechter actually taught us, one of my favorite quotes from him was, ‘I’m here to teach you, not fail you.’ He really cared about his students and the classes he taught and he made sure we were prepared. He wanted to make sure we weren’t just there for nothing,” said senior Trevor Marchent, a student of Mr. Hechter’s AP Economics class. Hechter’s attitude made Marchent want to honor his teacher and was why he found his class so important.

After this day-long event of remembrance for Mr. Hechter, all the students and teachers  who wore bow ties had two group pictures taken for a memorial page in the yearbook.

If you missed this chance to honor Mr. Hechter, consider attending the charity walk on March 10 that is benefiting cancer research, starting at 9:45AM. We hope to see all of you there.
