This month of April marked the beginning of innovation in the science classrooms. Physics classes at Palo have started to construct mini roller coasters for their fourth quarter projects. The stakes are high as Mr.VanVoorhis, Mrs. Christian’s, Mrs. Ferrer’s and Mr. Steinline classes all compete to build the best roller coasters.

Students will be graded on the materials they use, how intricate their project is and how much decoration is added for their theme.

The materials students are allowed to use are paper products and glue. Non paper materials may be used to decorate the coaster.

The requirements are that the base will be no longer than 20”x 30’’. No support may be outside the base. Lastly, the height of the roller coaster must be no taller than one meter.

The model coaster must include a free fall drop, a loop, a hill, a banked turn of at least 90 degrees, a stop and must have a theme.

With freedom to use any theme lots of students are having fun with this project.

Junior, Alexus Burton states, “My theme is the Pyramid of Giza.”

This project is showcasing the creativity of Palo students who are building coasters inspired by magic to completely out of this world galaxy coasters!

The physics classes will walk around the other classes and judge other students coasters.

Along with the project students will conduct a part two of this activity including a presentation or other demonstration. This of course depends on the physics teacher though.
