British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, infamous for his roles in the Ali-G show (2000-2004), Borat (2006), and the Dictator (2012), returns in this gut wrenchingly funny Showtime series. Cohen portrays various archetypal characters including an Israeli colonel, far right conspiracy theorist, far left gender studies professor, an ex-convict, Italian playboy, and a Finnish YouTuber as he brings out the folly and shame of America’s faulty politicians and activists. The first episode premiered on July 15, 2018. Among the victims include Bernie Sanders, Jason Spencer, Joe Arpaio, Trent Lott, Roy Moore, and Corey Lewandowski, amongst many others and many others to come. The interviewed take the walk of shame, some with a smaller impact on their reputations, some more than just that. Just a few days after the second episode aired and the clip going viral, Georgia representative Jason Spencer resigned. Various other duped victims came forward making excuses for how they were tricked. One thing is clear. There is no excuse for doing the stupid things they were instructed and readily accepted to do including barring ones behind, being racist, and endorsing the arming of kids in the classroom including mortar training as Spencer and the other various politicians acted out and endorsed. Cohen achieves his goal of bringing out the worst and yet the funniest in his victims and succeeds in doing so. Examples of such scenes include the far right conspiracy theorist aggressively  proposing to put the 99 percent into the one percent with faulty math and another of the far left professor rap battling in Atlanta. Much of Cohen’s scenes are performed with much crudeness in them which only adds to the hilarity while making his guests appear all the more foolish. My only complaint is with his Finnish character who is outright irritating and with a stronger character could have enhanced the comedy within the scenes filmed with Arpaio and Clark. The show is hard hitting with its comedy and makes audiences laugh while simultaneously making them think about the America they live in. However, it is only too bad Cohens cover has been blown, which will perhaps keeping him from executing another hilarious season.
