On Friday, Sept. 6th Palo’s varsity football team defeated the Desert Oasis Diamondbacks in their first home game, starting strong with a 2-0 season.
According to Coach Hallead, “Our guys really stepped up to the challenge to play a good physical game.”
Just under three minutes into the game, Dacen Phister scored the first touchdown for the Panthers, followed by an amazing kick by Zachary Moore giving the scoreboard an extra point of 7-0.
Desert Oasis was quick to follow up with a touchdown of their own, with 3:41 minutes left in the first quarter giving an updated score of 7-6.
The Panthers stayed determined in keeping a strong lead as Paul Myro scored a touchdown seconds later, trailed by another good kick by Moore. This ended the first quarter with the Panthers on top with a score of 14-6.
The second quarter started just like the first quarter ended, with Paul Myro scoring another touchdown for the Panthers.
“I felt amazing after scoring those two touchdowns; just being able to come in and play after just two weeks of practice and help this team win is awesome!” said Myro.
With this being Myro’s first game playing for the Palo Verde Panthers, he was certainly making his name known.
The Diamondbacks managed to get another touchdown of their own bringing the score to 21-12 before the Panthers headed down into the locker room for halftime.
During halftime, the Palo Verde Primadonnas and the marching band gave a great performance for the student section.
The third quarter was eventful for both teams, but with less than four minutes left in the game, Tyler Quinn rushed an amazing 76-yard touchdown to end the game with a 27-12 win for the Panthers. The Panthers were proud of their win and ready to follow up next time.
“Of course, you get those nervous butterflies at times but that is all part of that amazing feeling you get every game being on the field!” Dacen Phister said.
The next home game for the Panthers is on Thursday, Sept. 19th for Thursday Night Lights at 7 pm against the Foothill Falcons.
