The Panthers took home a strong victory against Faith Lutheran for the last home game of the 2019 football season. Palo’s upperclassmen were honored on Senior Night and earned a 55-35 win against the Crusaders on Nov. 1st.
The game started out strong with quarterback Paul Myro running in a ten-yard touchdown, followed by an extra point kick from Zachary Moore. This gave the Panthers in the first quarter of 7-0.
The second quarter started out with senior Dacen Phister running in Palo’s second touchdown of the game followed by Moore’s second extra-point kick of the game.
“I’m definitely going to miss the fact that all these dudes are my brothers, and being with most of these guys over the past few years has just strengthened that and it just is a really powerful brotherhood,” Phister said.
Faith managed to run in a touchdown shortly after with a two-point conversion giving them some points on the scoreboard of 14-8.
Amir McGruder was quick to respond running in another touchdown for the Panthers along with another good kick from Moore. McGruder wasn’t satisfied with only one touchdown and caught an interception to run in a second touchdown. This brought the Panthers’ lead up to 27-8.
“I knew Faith was going to be a tough team and I knew in order for the team to be successful, doing my job was essential. I’m glad I was able to get a spark going with the team. It was an amazing feeling,” McGruder said.
At halftime, the crowd cheered loud and proud as each senior was recognized for their last season as a Palo Verde Panther, and an amazing season at that.
The Panthers didn’t let the emotional tug get them too strongly and came back strong starting off the third quarter the same way they started the game. Myro was swift to run in a touchdown followed by another great kick from Moore.
Faith followed up with a touchdown of their own but failed at an attempt to make a two-point conversion. Myro ran in a 65-yard touchdown for the Panthers leaving the third quarter with a score of 41-14.
Faith started the fourth quarter ready for battle with a touchdown and a two-point conversion. Twenty seconds later, Phister was running in his own 65-yard touchdown and Moore followed up with another successful kick bringing the score to 48-22.
Faith brought in two more touchdowns and an extra point kick in the fourth quarter while senior Tyler Quinn ran in the last touchdown of the game, ending it all with a final score of 55-35.
Palo played their last home game with heart and strength, giving the senior Panthers a night they’ll always remember. Come out and support the Panthers at their last game before playoffs on Friday, Nov. 8th at Arbor View High School where they’ll take on the Auggies at 7 pm.
“Football had encouraged me to look to the next play. Everyone has a bad play, and I have had my fair share of them but with football, I have learned that one play can’t define how you’ll do for the rest of the game and you just gotta believe you can do better,” said senior Maximus Lear.
