K-Pop and How It’s Becoming More Popular

K-pop or Korean pop music has been getting more and more attention from all around the world. Music listeners and other artists have started to give K-pop artists  respect, and even collaborate with them.

An all girl K-pop group by the name Blackpink is managed by YG Entertainment, which is an entertainment company in South Korea.  The group consists of 4 members: Jennie, Rose, Lisa, and Jisoo.

August 28, 2020, they released a single called “Ice Cream” that featured Selena Gomez. The song is mainly in English, but also has some Korean in the rap portion of the song.

When asked about their initial reaction to the song, a junior at Palo Verde High School, Kayla Mclee said, “The song is good and the beat is catchy.”

Blackpink previously released a song titled “How You Like That”, and it claimed the most views in the first 24 hours after being released, with over 56.7 million views.

In 2019, Blackpink also performed at Coachella, which made them the first K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella.

Another group, called BTS, who is under BigHit Entertainment in South Korea, consists of seven male members. They are RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook.

They released a song called “Dynamite” on August 20th 2020. This was not their first song where they sang in English, but this was their first song completely in English.

“If I hear it on the radio, I probably wouldn’t skip it,” answered Emily Paschell when questioned if she would listen to the song again.

The song has been number one on the Billboard hot charts for two weeks in a row. Justin Bieber tweeted, “My guys from BTS out here killing it. Congrats, fellas,” which shows how even an American popstar can see how successful BTS and Kpop in general is becoming, as it grows more mainstream.

In addition, BTS also performed the newly released song at the VMAs, but this was not their first time. They have performed a handful of times in America starting all the way in 2017 when they performed “DNA” at the American Music Awards.

Overall, Kpop has been getting more attention, and has been getting recognized by more stars. Make sure to be on the lookout for more Korean pop singers to perform in American music shows, and for their songs to be played on the radio.
